Plaza de Olavide
This morning we visited a mediation school and an intercultural mediation group in Madrid. Afterwards, we had a few hours to kill, so we decided to look at a few neighborhoods we might like to live in next year. We walked to Plaza Mayor, got a map from the tourist office, and sat by one [...]

El Misterio De La Vida / The Mystery Of Life
I’m a visual person. Every week I wonder what our baby looks like now. Week 10. The baby is just over an inch long. Weighs only as much as four paper clips. Finger and toes are formed. The tail is disappearing. I’ve been looking for this book called El Misterio de la Vida that our [...]

Comparing Pregnancy Diet in Spain and the U.S.
An article I read in the Broadsheet, a magazine in English about Spain, talked about the differences between having a baby in England and having a baby in Spain. My experience has shown that even a simple doctor’s visit can be very different at times. For example, at the medical clinic I went to in [...]

Monday night April asked if I had any questions I wanted to ask the doctor on Tuesday at our first doctor’s visit of the pregnancy. I thought for a moment. “No,” I said. “Do you?” I asked. “No,” April said. Tuesday morning I had a few minutes, so I did a search online to find [...]

Seeing is Believing
We had our first doctor’s visit today, and we are happy to report, we have a healthy baby! We got to see and hear the baby’s heart beating, and s/he even moved around a few times while we were watching the ultrasound. God is good.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwich
April had what she’s calling her “first strange food craving” of her pregnancy tonight—a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I eat at least one peanut butter and jelly sandwich a week on average. I import containers of Jiff peanut butter from the States. Tonight April tells me, as she takes her first bite, “This is [...]

Status Symbol
Today I updated my definition of a status symbol. In the past, as in yesterday, if you had said “status symbol,” I would have said “SUV,” or Sports Utility Vehicle. The Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Land Cruiser, the list goes on. Every car company has one (no, my mistake, many) to choose from [...]

Our very own Valenciana
I’ve been told that in Spain people take pride in where their children are born. To be born in a particular city or province means that for the rest of your life you will always be from that one place. A few days after we found out April was pregnant we decided to tell our [...]
