Optical Illusion
The midwife shook the bottle, turned it upside down, and drew a circle of blue gel on April’s belly. She rolled over the ultrasound machine, which was nothing more than a laptop on a cart with a holster on the side for the probe, which she untangled and rolled over April’s stomach like a miniature [...]

Wii Fit
I sat on the couch with a pen in my hand. I was supposed to be editing my book proposal, but instead I was watching April stand on a Wii balance board. The balance board is an accessory for Nintendo’s Wii video game system, and it’s a white slab that looks like a household weight [...]

El Misterio De La Vida: The Inside Story

Lady Bug
Today we got our first baby present. Thanks, Laurie! It’s not a stuffed animal–it’s a stuffed bug. Even better, right? On the package it says, “Soft squeaker toy for baby’s amusement & delight.” The fun is just beginining. Squeak. Squeak.

No more secrets
We finally got to tell Troy and Heather today that we’re pregnant. April went upstairs to their bookshelf, grabbed a few books about pregnancy and parenting, came back upstairs and plopped them on the kitchen table. “Can we borrow a few books?” April said with a smile. Heather made the connection. “Are you pregnant?” she [...]

Reading the Baby
Tell me if you see anything strange in this sentence I wrote to Kelly Wills in an online chat conversation last week. We were talking about biblical literary criticism. “I think I’ve mentioned this to you before, but one of the newer and most popular ways of reading the baby in theological circles is literary [...]
