I’m trying to make a shift in my thinking about discipline. The big switch for me has been taking a mental eraser and smudging out the word “discipline” and carefully writing in the word “training.” Disciplining Alleke really refers to my responsibility to train her in all things as she grows up. Discipline is not only punishing Alleke when she does something wrong, it begins much earlier with training her how to behave in the first place.
Here are a few stories about discipline from my experience:
Bed Book – writing your own kids book to train your child
Nursery – deciding which decisions your child can make
Oh Ye of Little Faith – following Alleke’s cues
I Scream. You Scream. We All Scream for Ice Cream – Alleke turns into a screamer
Bad Influence – when your kid is the bully
Yes and No – parenting with more yes’s than no’s
Toothbrush – trying to get Alleke to brush her teeth
Rocking Horse – telling Alleke not to touch the Christmas tree
I’m big. She’s small. – telling Alleke what to do because I’m bigger than she is
Sweet Potato – one creative way to get a toddler to eat
If you would like to see all the stories I’ve written about discipline, you can find them here.
