Nervous
The only time I thought about being a parent today was a short five-minute conversation I had with April before we went to bed. The conversation wasn’t much, but it’s all I have to tell, so here goes.
I was sitting on the couch, and April was stuffing residency paperwork into a folder at the table. I was trying to convince her that we should finish watching a movie we had started a few days ago. She said she was too tired, and we should just go to bed instead. I got all mopey and said, “Is it too much to ask for one hour in a day to relax with your wife?” April got the hint that I needed a little extra attention, so she came over and sat on the couch and we talked for five minutes before we went to bed.
I said, “I don’t know if I had too much caffeine or what, but I’ve been nervous all day.”
“Did you have any caffeine today?” April asked.
“No,” I said.
“What are you nervous about?”
“I don’t know,” I said.
“Are you nervous about something at work?”
“I don’t think so.”
“Are you nervous about having the baby?”
“I don’t know how I could be nervous about having a baby,” I said. “I haven’t had any time to think about it all day until now.”
April thought for a moment. “That’s probably why you’re nervous,” she said. “We’re ten days from our due date, and you didn’t have time to think about having a baby today.”
