Euro Cup 2008
Euro Cup is a soccer tournament for European nations, held every four years between the World Cup. Spain played Germany in the championship last night.
We’ve been watching all the games together as a family. We watched one game at home, a couple in a bar down the street, a bunch at the beach house in Portugal, and the last two at Amy’s house (since she has the biggest TV).
As Spain advanced towards to the championship game, April and I became, shall we say…more animated spectators of the game: sitting at the edge of the couch, nervously eating sunflower seeds, sometimes shouting and pointing a finger at the television, and in the most horrifying moments, covering our faces in our hands and watching the game through the cracks in our fingers.
Alleke watched all the games with us, so last night when we buzzed up to Amy’s apartment and April said to Alleke, “Tonight’s the big soccer game,” Alleke knew exactly what to do.
“Kick,” Alleke said, nodding. She swung her leg around, simulating a penalty kick. Then she pointed at April, playing her part. “Oh no,” she yelled, throwing her head back and covering her face with her hands.
I couldn’t have described the game better myself. It was close, and we won.
