Apartment Hunting

I left Alleke at the table with a box of crayons and some scrap paper. Later, when I came back I found her hunched over the newspaper circling classifieds in the apartments section.

I guess she figured we could use the help.

The contract on our current apartment ends this Thursday. Our landlords emailed on Monday to say that they no longer wanted to sell our apartment, which also meant they no longer intended to sign our new contract that would allow us to stay living in the apartment until they sold it.

In other words, our landlords strongly suggested that we find a new place to live in the next few days. So, we’ve been pouring over classifieds in newspapers and online and haven’t found much. According to one of the main classifieds websites, there were only 17 two-bedroom apartments for rent in our price range in all the neighborhoods in the city center put together (and none in our neighborhood that we haven’t already seen).

I’m sure our friends would tell you part of our problem is we’re too attached to our neighborhood. If we had our choice, we would stay living in our apartment, or in our building, or at worse, on our street, which surprisingly doesn’t give us many options.

This afternoon we finally managed to haggle our landlords into letting us stay in the apartment for another six months, hoping the market will improve for all of us. We haven’t given them our official answer yet because we’re still holding out for a more permanent solution, but at least we know we can stay put for six months if we need to.

good luck! I’m in the US and while there are lots of options I hate apartments and apartment hunting for that matter. at least you were able to haggle with your landlords…around here they won’t have any of that!

Thank goodness they agreed on the six months. Good luck with your hunt.
