Bus 75
The woman in the fur coat reaches up and presses the button. The sign at the front of the bus illuminates, “parada solicitada.”
We watch as the the woman and her two friends make their way through the bus, each stopping to say a kind word to Alleke, before they find a spot near us at the doors.
Alleke leans over my shoulder to get a better look. When she sees the woman buttoning up her fur coat, she begins kicking her legs and saying, “buh bye, buh bye, buh bye.”
The woman looks up. “What’s she saying?” she asks the others.
Our friend Victoria leans in. “She saying ‘bye bye,’ which means adios in English.”
The woman in the fur coat raises her eyebrows. “Oh, you’re a smart little girl,” she says, reaching over and squeezing the end of Alleke’s nose.
The three women look at each other and giggle.
The bus stops, and the doors open. Helping each other down, the women turn and wave to Alleke.
“Bye bye, bye bye, bye bye,” they yell in English, giggling at each other as the doors close and the bus pulls into traffic.
