You Missed a Spot

I watched from the couch with a book in my lap as Alleke disappeared into the bathroom. She returned with a washcloth wadded up in her hand like a fistful of cash. She glanced at me, then walked into the middle of the room and sat down.

She dropped the washcloth on the floor, stared at it for a moment as if trying to remember what came next, then leaned over, pressed her hand into it, and began moving the washcloth back and worth across the floor with the same frenetic pace as a windshield wiper.

She kept at it, even when I called for April to come and see.

“Look,” I said, nodding at Alleke, “she’s mopping the floor.”

April stood at the edge of the room, covering her mouth with her hand and shaking her head. Behind her, the mop bucket sat at the end of the hall with the mop handle leaning against the wall.

April walked over and knelt down next to Alleke. Grinning, she pointed at the floor.

“Honey,” she said, “you missed a spot.”

Speaking of cleaning up messes, read about the time I spilled a glass of milk in Alleke’s face…
