Madrid, La Suma de Todos

Suit and Tie
We're standing in line at the bank. I'm grabbing Alleke's fingers with my mouth to make her giggle.

She stops laughing for a moment, and lifts her chin so she can see over my shoulder. She looks very serious.

I turn around to see what she's looking at.

A man in a suit and tie with a briefcase is looking at Alleke, and sticking out his tongue.

PDA
We step onto the metro. Two teenagers are making-out in the corner.

Alleke lifts her head to see where we are. She stretches.

The metro comes to a stop, and the doors open. I lean down and look through the window to see where we are. The sign says República Argentina.

I catch a glimpse of the couple in the corner. They're wrapped so tightly it's hard to tell who is who.

She puts her arms around his shoulders, and he kisses her neck.
She looks at Alleke, winks and blows her a kiss.

Alleke smiles.

Breakfast
April and I are talking about how we're going to set up Alleke's room in our new apartment. April's pitching a new idea, then she stops.

"What's wrong?" she asks.

"Nothing," I say. I take a sip of my orange juice.

April frowns, then continues.

Alleke is bouncing on my lap and reaching for the spoon sitting on the table.

A girl sitting with friends at the next table watches Alleke over April's shoulder. She's probably been watching Alleke for fifteen minutes now.

The girl smiles and makes faces. She giggles when Alleke smiles back.

The waiter stops next to our table and shows three women to their seats. They must be on a work break.

They settle in, then one of them spots Alleke, and nudges the other two. All three of them look at Alleke. They smile and whisper.

I look at April and smile.

"I'm sorry. What did you say?"

Everyone loves watching a baby. It is as if we get caught up in another world of innocence and full enjoyment of life while watching children. What a gift you and April give to others when you bring Alleke out to see the world!

remember how much people look at us just cause we don't look spanish? that plus Alleke's an adorable baby...I can't count the amount of times I've caught Rodrigo pulling that very same tongue trick with little kids...

Kim, that's true. Last time we lived in Madrid, the people we got to know on our street called us "los rubios." I don't think we fit in :)

As for Rodrigo, that seems to be the norm. I can't think of a single person I've met from Spain who didn't absolutely love kids.

Spain is a great place to be with a little one.

Hey Crulls! I miss you guys and beautiful Madrid. I've kept up with your blog and am happy to see what a beautiful, healthy baby Alleke is! She looks like you, Kelly. No, you April. No... err... And congratulations on the warm new home -- I can already imagine all the fellowship that will be happening under those skylights. :)
