Sandwich Kiss
April walked in the kitchen and filled up her glass with water from the sink.
“How’s it going in there?” I asked, setting down the knife I was using to cup up tomatoes.
“Slow,” April said, referring to the third chapter of her Masters thesis she was hoping to have written by the end of the week. It was Friday.
She set her water glass on the counter and put her arms around my neck.
“I haven’t started writing yet,” she said, grimacing. She hugged me tighter, and I could feel her round belly against my stomach, then she gave me a kiss.
The baby kicked just at that moment, and we both felt her move.
I smiled. “Our first sandwich kiss,” I said.

I don’t remember much about being a little kid, but one of the things I do remember is sandwich kisses.
I remember being in the kitchen with my mom, and she would be making dinner, maybe turning over hamburger in a skillet with a spatula, and my dad would arrive home from work. He would come in the kitchen door from the garage, put down his school bag, walk over to where my mom was standing at the stove, and give her a kiss.
I’d run over and begin pulling on his sleeve until he’d pick me up and ask me if I wanted a sandwich kiss. I would shake my head yes, and then my parents would each kiss me on one cheek until I started giggling. I loved it. Sandwich kisses are one of my favorite memories from being little.
So today when April gave me a kiss, and our little girl started kicking us in the ribs, I thought (with the imagination of a new parent who thinks his daughter is communicating all kinds of things to her dad from inside the womb) that maybe she was asking for her first sandwich kiss.
Do you remember the ways your parents showed affection for you when you were little?
How do you like to show affection for your kids or your family?

What a lovely blog entry!
When my big boys were little we used to do butterfly kisses…taking turns at kissing each others cheaks with your eye lashes, it tickles and always gets an affectionate giggle.
Love to April

When Jesse was little we would do a group hug and say “kisses around!” This meant that eveyone kissed the person next to them–first everyong to one direction and then everyone to the other direction. I think there are lots of variations to sandwich kisses
